Bravery and courage come in many forms, and when a woman of a certain age, who has never ever been on stage before, decides to challenge herself and audition for a play—that takes some initiative. Then when she really goes to the audition, sees experienced actors go first, and still gives her all… you have to admit, that’s pretty brave. And, then, when she gets the offer of a role and accepts and commits to it in spite of self-doubt…well, that takes real courage.
That’s what Beverly Donitzen did.
It’s the kind of opportunity that only community theatre can provide. Beverly will be performing the role of Lillian during our first week, October 13-16. Here’s how she describes the experience as she prepares for opening night.
“When my granddaughter tried out for a for a role in a play, I asked her director if there were ever any roles for women my age. That director didn’t get to reply for Cricket Hall interjected, “Ooo, oooo, oooo”, then told me about her upcoming auditions for the play she was directing, The Oldest Profession.
“I felt uncertain as to my ability and worth, yet was encouraged by certain wonderful people, (and personally determined that my past life not rule my future). Sooo, I nervously read and sang for the part. And here I am.
“Being so new to any theater participation, I was completely delighted to be involved with such a wonderful band of women. They’re fabulous in every sense of the word.
“As to the role, my lady, Lillian, is extremely stylish, confident and happy with her life and work. I, on the other hand, am fairly disorganized, and not nearly as confident. Still, with all the previous roles my life has contained, THIS role, along with acting, singing, building friendships with these lovely women with their unique epics, has been one of the top 10 best happenings ever for me.”
