Reasons To Be Pretty is a contemporary play about the tyranny of beauty… in the minds of the pretty, in the minds of the not so pretty, in the minds of the observers and critics. it’s the third in a trilogy by playwright Neil LaBute (the first two were The Shape of Things and Fat Pig) about society’s obsession with physical appearance.

Brief descriptions of the characters (all 20-somethings):

Greg works at a food warehouse with two of the other characters. He’s a nice guy who has a way of saying the wrong thing without being aware of it. He reads a lot of classic American literature, in an effort to better himself, and prefers to avoid conflict.

Steph is Greg’s girl friend at the beginning of the play. She works in a beauty salon. Tends to be very hot-headed and argumentative. One of Greg’s unsuspecting remarks causes her to end their relationship. She’s good friends with Carly, but not with Kent.

Kent is married to Carly. He’s kind of a chauvinistic jock and values women only by their appearance. Trophies, in sports and beautiful women, are his focus. He’s proud that he’s married to such a hot chick, but isn’t hesitant to be unfaithful to her.

Carly is “the pretty one.” She knows she’s pretty and finds it to be a burden at times. Vulnerable, but can be manipulative. She works as a security guard at the same warehouse as Kent and Greg.
